Compared to the
previous weeks, it has been a tad slow here at work.
I just finished
transposing a rate table from an email provided by a subconsultant into a prime
agreement. This required changing six columns of numbers for twenty
professional classifications. Not hard, just tedious because the document I was
amending was a PDF.
Simultaneously, sort
of, I was preparing for our Write On meeting tonight. We are meeting on Zoom
tonight, and part of the meeting will be me sharing my screen and demonstrating
the benefits of using a website like “Submittable.”
Those not in the
writing game might never have heard of this site, or sites of similar ilk.
Submittable operates
as a host for numerous contests and writing platforms. It posts a directory of
current opportunities. It lists the fee, and most often, you submit your piece
of fiction to the publication through Submittable and pay any potential fees.
It streamlines a process that was previously
handled in-house by each publication.
It also maintains a
list of submissions for writers, updating the status from accepted or declined when
the publication decides.
It’s handy, and apparently,
I have been using it since at least 2016.
I haven’t been faithful
about submitting stories to publications over the last year or two, which is a
bit strange after having three or four stories accepted in 2021 and 2022.
Even with Submittable,
the process of submitting is arduous. It requires researching publications,
deciding if I want to pay any submission fees, having stories that I feel are
worthy of publication, and writing cover letters and updating my personal bio.
Not hard, just tedious.
