We spent this morning at an estate sale that featured 5,000 albums for sale. They had the albums separated into boxes and spread through three rooms on the main floor of the house.

Dozens of people rifled through boxes, some carried a box of their own to fill. Some came in groups and called out to each other as they found one artist or another.

One guy seemed intent in displaying his knowledge. A few minutes after arriving, I was across a table from him, and he found a Moby Grape album.

“Oh, man, someone missed this one,” he said. “If this has the poster inside, it’s a hundred-dollar album.”

Later he talked about white labels being promos and increasing values. Some of it was interesting, some of it was him clearly trying to show off.

I am not a collector like that. I am generally interested in finding albums that I find interesting or artists that I like.

Such as this album. The jacket isn’t in the greatest shape, but it’s OK. The actual vinyl is in immaculate shape. Pretty astounding since I am pretty sure it’s from 1962. I liked getting it because it’s Dylan’s first album, and while most of it is covers like this tune, it’s still the first impression most of the world had of Dylan.

The liner notes are glowing, of course, but having read hundreds of these things, I also know that you’re likely to get as glowing of a write up for some artist that never released anymore albums. This is Bob Dylan, he lived up to the hype.

In all, I bought 10 albums, a nice number, and I wasn’t at all concerned how much any of them were worth.
