I am surrounded by steel and engines and dust. I am sitting in the driver’s seat of our truck outside of the Cimco Recycling in Sterling waiting for Jodi to return.
We’ve just delivered a load of old wire that was used for electric fence around the hay field. It was coiled in the bed of truck as we pulled onto the scale minutes earlier. I stopped until the light turned green and I could proceed into the wilderness that is the junkyard.
Straight ahead there was a mountain of some sort of ground up dirt. It was hard to tell exactly what it was comprised of.
We turned a left and split between two semis before coming to the mounds of junk. Old appliances. Hunks of metal. So much stuff that it’s hard to even distinguish what the objects once were. We backed to a pile, and we then heaved the coils of wire into the conglomeration of junk.
We left then, getting weighed again, before pulling before the office.
Jodi was gone awhile. The place was unusually busy. Workers buzzing around in forklifts and skid loaders. Semis barreling through filled with who knows what. And other people like us, bringing a load of junk to get rid of.
Jodi finally returns and she has four dollars and twenty cents. Not enough to buy lunch, but the extra space made by getting rid of the wire made it worth the trip.
