Our nephew, Logan, returned to his Alma Mater, UW-Platteville, to play with the marching band during halftime of the school’s Homecoming game.
The show had the theme of “The Pioneer’s Spirit.” The regular band opened with a selection from “Cirque du Soleil.” The alumni joined the second song, this one from Carl Douglas.
The PA announcer discussed the song and Douglas, but I missed how this embodied the “Pioneer Spirit.” My thought was that it was a song that the alumni likely had played and was easy to pick up even if they hadn’t practiced for a while.
The regular band took over the during the next tune, before everyone came together again to the play the school fight song.
Logan graduated last spring, and stayed with friends still attending the school the night before.
“Would you have had friends to stay with if you went back to NIU after graduating?” Jodi asked as we drove home.
“Not really,” My closest friends did stay on the campus at least the next semester. One graduated the December after I graduated, so he was gone after that. The other pursued his master’s, but it never really occurred to me to go stay with him. Mostly because the first couple years after college I was working two jobs, one being the newspaper where I was working strange hours.
I also never expanded my friend base that much at NIU. I wasn’t a joiner. Looking back, I wished I had been more involved in the English Department, perhaps in the publications they produced.
