There are only two times of the year that I really spend any time at any kind of retail store other than Menards and occasionally the grocery store. One is while getting ready for Jodi’s birthday in August, and the other is before Christmas.

Otherwise, I just don’t go to them. I have no reason.

We’ve spent the evening shopping for our family members, hitting about a half dozen stores, breaking that up with a stop to Al & Ledas, one of Sterling’s staple pizza places.

I’ve also been keeping my eyes out for things for Jodi, because I am going to repeat the process tomorrow on my own, as I try to finalize my gifts for her for the year.

The stores, as you would expect, are a bit frantic. Not necessarily overflowing with people, but there are a fair number of customers everywhere we stop. Some leisurely stroll through the aisles, looking at this and that. Others are trying to wrangle kids while grabbing this or that. Some are teenagers, probably just killing time on a Friday night. Others stalk their products with a singular mind, pouncing on this or that and scurrying away to regroup and strike again.

I am of two minds about shopping. One: I don’t like being rushed. I want to take my time to make a good decision. Two: I don’t want to spend a lot of time doing it.

A paradox, that’s for sure.

So, I try to make lists, either physical ones or ones kept haphazardly in my mind. I decide the best stores to hit, hoping not to make any needless stops. I then circle things I think I might want to purchase, study them, and make the final call.
