The Cubs lost to the Brewers tonight in Game 5 of their National League Division Series. The win clinched the series for Milwaukee, which will now play the defending champion Dodgers in NLCS.
This marks the twelfth time the Cubs have made the postseason in my lifetime. A daunting number when you consider they only made it three times in the first twenty years of my life, and one was in 1984 when I was all of two years old.
I remember the disappointment when they were knocked out by the Giants in 1989 NLCS. Or listening in my truck to a NLDS game in 1998 while waiting for a Homecoming bonfire to start. And then there was the crushing collapse of the 2003 team in the NLCS against the Marlins.
Of course, the biggest highlight is the 2016 World Series championship, an occasion I celebrated with Jodi and with a severely injured knee and ankle from a fall from the hay mow a week or so earlier.
That run was emotionally and physical draining. The games were generally close, and then the Cubs fell behind Cleveland three games to one in the World Series before making the heroic comeback.
Also, the games just go late into the night. Having to stay up one night in a week is one thing, but doing it four nights in a given week, and then often struggling to sleep with the game excitement still in the system.
So, I guess there’s a blessing in the Cubs losing. I wasn’t looking forward to another week of late-night games. It may sound like I am sort of a weak fan, but I am a realist. I like going to bed at a normal time.
Plus, as well as the Cubs did this season, I didn’t foresee a series with the Dodgers going well. I’ll take what they achieved this season, as I think they overachieved a bit, and hope they make some moves in the offseason to take the next step.
I can worry about the late nights if they roll around next fall.
