Keeping the financial books for a small church isn’t rocket science. Most weeks it amounts to depositing the offering into the bank and paying whatever bills we might have.
The bills for our church are few. The pastor. The custodian. The donation to the synod. Plus, electric and LP gas. There are a couple other bills that are less regular. The big one is insurance.
The insurance bill is the biggest next to the pastor. It always feels like we are putting out a lot money that we’ll never get back.
I mean, I am the guy doing the books, so I know that there’s a point in the future here that getting closer where the cost of keeping going is going out number the amount coming in. So, there’s a good chance we might never make a claim, so we don’t really need the insurance.
This job as treasurer was thrust upon when the last treasurer was ready to quit, and I was the only other able body and mind to do it. That was my only qualification.
While I spend most of my days putting together proposals that include a fee, I don’t care much for counting money. It’s not my strong point. Jodi has always managed most of our home accounts.
That being said, I am good with money, but that’s only because I am cheap.
