I think I knew of
KISS by reputation before I knew them by their music. At best, I have a murky
understanding of their history and catalog.
They were the group
that wore face paint and costumes. Supposedly they were satanists, hedonists,
and everything else that could lead a young person’s mind astray.
I probably heard “Rock
and Roll All Nite” first. Then in junior high or early high school, I was
exposed to more of their catalog. I liked it fine.
Most of their tunes
were either about rock and roll, sex, or love. So, pretty much like every other
rock’n’roll band. Much like Ozzy, their reputation was built more on rumor and
conjecture than substance.
They’ve never been a
group where I have had a strong urge to delve into their entire catalog,
feeling like I probably would just get weaker versions of their hit songs.
Maybe I should see if I am wrong about that.
I think I’ve heard
that Gene Simmons is a favorite among the conservative media, which is another of
the weird oddities of our times. A guy that for years endorsed promiscuity and was
seen as the root of evil by Christian groups is now a darling of the political
right.
Anyways, Ace Frehley died last week, and I know he was the
guitarist, and I know that he had left the band at least once. I am not sure there
was a reconciliation. Perhaps I should look that up.
