Jodi and I shared a plate of nachos and a coke, sitting on a bale of hay at the intersection of two roads in downtown Dixon. It was the town’s Scarecrow Festival. There were food vendors, arts & crafts booths, and various other activities stretching over a few blocks and along the city’s riverfront.
Jodi’s mom is a part of a line dancing group and they performed for a couple hours near midday during an unseasonable warm and humid October day. For the occasion, the dancers learned a special dance to this song, dressed as witches and carried broomsticks.
“You think this song is from a play or movie or something?” Jodi asked.
“I don’t know.” I didn’t. The fact was that I don’t think I had ever heard of it before.
Once I caught the chorus, I used that to search the song title.
“Huh, it’s the Plain White T’s”
“Hmmph.”
We both agreed that we didn’t think we knew any song by them other than “Hey There Delilah.” That includes owning a CD of theirs at one point, but Delilah was the only song on it that I remember burning off, and I don’t think any of the others caught my ear. I wonder if I still have that CD?
The dance came to an end, and we decided to go find some dessert.
