Human movement. It’s tale of time from an infant’s first steps to the big ships crossing the big seas.

It’s a tale that archaeologists and geneticists and historians are still discovering. This group of early humanoids crossing a dried creek bed somewhere Asia, or Viking ship wrecks off the coasts of lands much farther from home than we imagined.

The finger of time has pointed to Africa as the cradle of homosapiens, but even that tale seems blurrier now than it did twenty years ago. Every few years we find remains of people in a place and from a time we don’t expect.

It’s almost as if anywhere people moved, they seemed to find more people. How can that be?

It’s the thing I’ve always wondered about the Bible creation story. Adam and Eve have sons, Cain and Abel.

When Cain murders Abel, he’s banished to the land of Nod, and there he has a son named Enoch.

Wait a second?

If Adam and Eve, were No. 1 and No. 2.

Where do these people of Nod come from?

Well a quick Google search suggest that time being funky in those days, that it was hundreds of years and that more descendants of Adam and Eve were born and those offspring begat more offspring. The people of Nod were those offspring living east of Eden.

The time being different thing is I think the explanation of dinosaurs I got from a pastor or someone when I asked as a child. Those first seven days, for example, extended thousands of years. When animals were first created, among them were dinosaurs.

By the time God got around to people, the dinosaurs had moved on. I guess that checks out.

The fact is people have always been moving. By land. By sea. Even by air, now. I think that’s why we assume once we get to digging around on Mars, we’ll find more than a few bones there, too.
