I entered a writing
contest this week but have really struggled to find the time and the motivation
to tackle the prompts. Last night I wrote an opening scene but could already
feel like it was something I would need to cut.
It opens with a
vampire getting a ride from the airport in an Uber. He is getting a ride home
before going to a party. There were some clever lines in there, but nothing
really pushing the plot forward.
For good measure, I
have the vampire attack the driver at the end of the ride.
I think I must
attack the prompt differently, I can tell that right now. By contest rules, I ,must
remain vague here. I have a specific character I must work into the story. I
thought at first, they’d be a secondary character met at the party, but I am
wondering if they shouldn’t be the main character.
There needs to some
sort of romantic entanglement. A party. And vampires.
The Writer’s Digest
I am reading is all about leaning into the weird. I want to do that here, but I
am struggling to find the right weird path to move down.
I have until
Saturday to get 2,000 words down, so I will have to choose one pretty soon
here.
