I continue to spin my wheels through this story for the writing contest. I’ve finally moved a couple characters to a party hosted by vampires. There are little glimpses of personalities starting to emerge, but I’ve yet to clamp down on the plot.
What I have done is indulge in tropes and witticisms that I find amusing, but stuff like that is like pepper, too much and you ruin the meal.
I find I am doing it most in dialogue, creating a 90s-esque sarcasm to everything. I might as well have Chandler Bing pop in and say, “Could this BE more campy?”
Camp. That’s where this is veering toward. Something that loses all seriousness. I suppose that’s my attitude toward a genre like vampire romance. You can either lean hard into the vampires, make everything dark and asexual. Maybe even drift into horror.
Or, you handle with a non-serious touch, winking at the clichés and the tropes, rolling eyes at the Twlight-ness of the genre, and then hope to subvert expectations.
I sound like I know what I am talking about. Truth is, I just need to write until I get to an end, and then focus on turning it into a story.
